ISO8217 TESTING METHOD
Our laboratory Fuel Quality Testing allows operators and coustomers a peace of mind knowing the delivered petroleum products meet up to standard quality before use. This service also assists in managing the risk of potential damage to machinery, the consequential threat to the safety tankers and vessels in which these products will be delivered, the crew and cargo and ensuring the petroleum complies with global and regional environmental legislation.
In petroleum fuel analysis, MG Logistics BV introduced a concept of testing products in our tanks at a time when deteriorating product quality and escalating fuel prices were giving consumers and ship operators massive problems. Today, the petroleum and petrochemical products quality has not improved and must be continuously monitored to ensure it meets specifications due to increased secondary refining, blending activities as well as potential contamination from sources within the supply chain.
In addition, stricter environmental regulations and the introduction of more Emission Control Areas have necessitated increased use of low sulphur fuels and also distillates which are not without quality issues.
ISO8217 is the recognised international fuel quality standard, against which petroleum product grades can be tested in line with the various fuel grade specifications. This is a commercial standard, assisting the purchase and supply process relating to fuels. We began offering petroleum products fuel testing service of this class and ISO8217 has been a continually evolving standard, with regular revisions, to ensure the standard keeps pace with the ever changing fuel types, legislation and industry requirements.
Everyday ships experience operational difficulties of some sort. It may be minor irregularities like a clogged filter or more severe cases like massive filter clogging, centrifuge sludging, fuel pump sticking, scuffing, combustion problems etc.
Even ships with good household and maintenance practices may experience problems if the fuel in use contains contaminants; is unstable; has poor cold flow properties; has poor ignition combustion properties; or has not been treated efficiently onboard.
Costs related to such cases can be significant, not only due to the spare parts costs, but also off-hire. Additionally, the risks and consequences of losing power in areas with a lot of traffic must be considered. Through advanced analysis methods, we are able to detect unusual components and/or contaminants in the fuels. In addition, we analyze deposits and sludge and also examine the damaged engine components to develop an understanding of what has happened.
